YANKTON, S.D.– Trailing 11-2 after five innings Saturday afternoon, the University of Jamestown baseball team found itself in a huge deficit against Mount Marty University.

The Jimmies’ sixth inning was one for the books, as they sent 19 batters to the plate, 16 of whom scored, against four Lancer pitchers, and held on for a 19-15 win in game one of the doubleheader.

Tayler Cullen (SR/Santa Rosa, Calif.) hit a grand slam and doubled to drive in six runs, and Hayden Brown (JR/Buckeye, AZ) earlier smashed a two-run home run. All told, the Jimmies used nine hits, five walks, two errors, and a pair of wild pitches to take an 18-11 lead.

Luke Shekeryk (SR/Seattle, WA) homered to lead off the fourth, and Xander Orejudos (JR/Ellensburg, WA) went deep to start the fifth for UJ, who fell behind 5-0 after one, 6-0 after two, and 7-0 after three.

Jamestown added another run in the seventh as Brown came home on an error by the Lancer shortstop to make it 19-12. Mount Marty put together a small rally in the bottom of the seventh, using back-to-back doubles to score a run, then a two-run homer made the score 19-15.

Cullen finished 3-for-5, while Orejudos, Brown, and Tanner Shepard (SR/Grand Rapids, MN) all had two hits.

Tanner Boe (SO/Mountlake Terrace, WA) (1-0) was credited with the win.

A five-run sixth inning broke game two open for Mount Marty as the Lancers got the split with a 9-1 win.

Tayler Cullen‘s leadoff home run in the fifth inning accounted for the only Jamestown run. Tanner Shepard had a fourth-inning double and Luke Shekeryk had single in the seventh for the three Jimmie hits.

The two teams conclude their weekend series with a doubleheader Sunday beginning at 12 p.m.
