VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Barnes County Historical Society Lecture Series Season 21 Presents: Dr. Alex Jorgensen and Professor Jacob Clauson (VCSU) “The War in Ukraine” 7PM Thursday, March 24th at the Barnes County Museum. (315 Central Ave N, Valley City, ND)
War is raging in Europe, with the largest military mobilization since World War II. What is happening in Ukraine? Why are Russian troops there? What are the objectives? Our presentation will focus on the history and geography of Ukraine and the politics of war. Ukraine has a rich and complex history that stretches back for centuries. While it is abundant in natural resources and farmland, its geostrategic position cannot be overlooked. Russian leaders have craved access to the Black Sea and to European energy markets for a long time. War with Ukraine may provide them with a solution.
Dr. Alex Jorgensen received his Ph.D. in political science from the University of Kansas in 2015. He has taught American government, public administration, public policy, comparative politics, and international relations at Missouri State University, Winona State University, and now at Valley City State University. Dr. Jorgensen has published on civic engagement, teaching and learning, and morality politics. He was born in Norway and has a personal and professional interest in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Prof. Clauson received his Master of Science in Geography from the University of Oregon in 2017. Previously he taught 7-12 Social Studies in Bottineau, ND, and Alexandria, MN. He has taught historical geography, human geography, and a variety of other courses in that time. He now teaches geography courses and social studies methods at Valley City State University.
