JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Melissa Powers has spent a lot of her life with dogs and training them to be the best they can be.

At a young age, Powers helped her dad start Great Plains Assistance Dogs, which has since become Service Dogs for America in Jud, N.D.

Today, Powers holds dog obedience trainings in the Spring and Fall for others who want to train their dogs with positive reinforcement. This is also coupled with the most common commands for dogs.

The 8-week course begins March 17 and is held every Thursday from 6 PM to 7 PM. Powers says class sizes are limited, but based on interest, she’ll explore holding further courses on the demand.

Powers added she has teamed up with the James River Humane Society to help find two dogs a forever home.

Dogs must be at least 12 weeks old and there is no upper age limit for the obedience course. Cost is $100 to register. If you’re interested, contact the James Valley Career and Tech Center to register for the class at 701-252-8841.
