VALLEY CITY, N.D. (VCSUAthletics.com) – The Valley City State softball team split a pair of games Thursday afternoon, first taking a 4-1 victory over Baldwin Wallace and then falling to No. 19 Olivet Nazarene 11-1 in just five innings.
The Vikings have now gone 2-2 at the Tucson Invitational Games and hold a 9-7 overall record this season. Baldwin Wallace drops to 1-6 overall while nationally ranked Olivet Nazarene is now 8-6 on the season.
VCSU has Friday off before resuming play in Tucson on Saturday. VCSU will face (RV) Aquinas College at 1:15 p.m. and University of Saint Francis at 3:30 p.m. CST. Live video and scoring updates will be available for both games.
VCSU 4, Baldwin Wallace 1
Valley City State took off with the lead late in the game in a 4-1 victory over Baldwin Wallace Thursday. The game was tied 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth when Sierra Crocker singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring Joelle Aiello. Aiello later iced the victory with a two-run single to right field in the sixth inning.
Joelle Lamontagne got the win in the circle for the Vikings Thursday. Lamontagne surrendered just one run on five hits over 7 innings, striking out six and walking one.
The Vikings collected seven hits on the day. Joelle Aiello went 3-for-4 at the plate, scored one run and drove in two. Crocker went 2-for-3 and drove in a run. Riley Perryman and Jessica Husband each added a hit, and Perryman and Ashlyn Diemert each scored a run for VCSU.
Nikki Camarati got the loss for Baldwin Wallace. She allowed four runs on seven hits over 6 innings and struck out ten. The Yellowjackets collected six hits on the day including a solo home run by Julia Gersey.
No. 19 Olivet Nazarene 11, VCSU 1 (5 innings)
Nationally ranked Olivet Nazarene couldn’t be stopped Thursday as the Tigers collected 11 runs on 12 hits to take the win over the Vikings in five innings.
The Tigers tallied four RBI singles in the second inning to open with a 6-0 lead early in the game. VCSU’s Riley Perryman scored on a passed ball in the third inning, but Olivet Nazarene answered with five more runs in the fourth to finish the game by run rule.
Brooke Gaudry got the loss for VCSU after 4 innings of work, allowing 11 runs on 12 hits while striking out two. Perryman had a pair of doubles and scored VCSU’s only run. Sierra Crocker, Alyssa DePoorter, Jessica Husband and Joelle Aiello each added a hit for the Vikings.
Kori Fricke got the win in the circle for Olivet Nazarene. She went all 5 innings, allowing one run on six hits while striking out four and walking one. Four Tigers had multiple hits in the game, led by Matti Lanie who went 3-for-3 at the plate with one run and one RBI. Kailyn Ngo added a pair of hits, scored two runs and drove in two.
