Henrik Voldal died March 1, 2022 at his farm home near Valley City, North Dakota. He was born May 14, 1935 in Valley City to Nels and Ruth (Erickson) Voldal. Henrik married Norma Bach in 1958, and the couple had two sons, Erik & Steve.
Henrik was a lifelong farmer. He farmed with his father south of Sanborn, and he farmed with his wife and sons west of Valley City.
Henrik was educated in Barnes County rural schools. He went on to earn a B.A. degree at Jamestown College in 1959; and an M.A. and Doctorate in Education at the University of North Dakota. He taught in public schools for several years and finally taught at Valley City State University, where he also served for a time as Chairman of the Division of Education and Psychology.
Henrik’s political roots trace back to his early life when time around the family supper table regularly included discussions about good government, social ethics and the responsibilities of citizenship. His belief in the constructive power of honest discussion led him to public service as an adult. He served as North Dakota’s Deputy Commissioner of Agriculture, and as a Barnes County Commissioner. He was active in the Democratic-NPL Party, which he served as precinct committeeman and district chairman. Henrik was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1956.
Henrik is survived by his wife, Norma; his sons, Erik (Dee), Rochester, MN and Steve (Laura), Pinetop, AZ; grandchildren Emily Voldal and Thomas Voldal; brothers Roger (Carla), Huron, SD, and David (Joyce), Ocala, FL; sister Vicki (Rodney) Rosenau, Valley City; and five nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Norman, and his sister Helen. Henrik requested that his remains be cremated, with no funeral services.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel, Valley City. An online guestbook is available at olivernathanchapel.com
