JAMESTOWN, ND. (jimmiepride.com) – The sixth-ranked University of Jamestown men’s volleyball team wasted little time in taking care of Central Christian College Thursday night, sweeping the Tigers 25-6, 25-10, 25-8 at Harold Newman Arena.
Jamestown improves to 8-2 and 6-0 in the GPAC while Central Christian falls to 0-16.
Tanner Woods (SO/Huntington Beach, Calif.) racked up five straight service aces in the opener as the Jimmies took a 10-1 lead. The lead grew to 17-2 behind the serving of Caylor Cox (SO/Helena, Mont.), who added three aces as part of a 6-0 run.
CC led 3-2 early in the second set, but a 7-0 UJ run put the Jimmies in front 9-3, and Jamestown never looked back. UJ hit .500 in the frame while CC hit -.533.
Korben Phillips (FR/Western, Australia) helped serve the Jimmies to a 12-1 lead in the third set, and UJ allowed back-to-back points just one time. A Vinny Miska (SO/Pequot Lakes, Minn.) kill put the Jimmies at match point, then Miska’s ace clinched the win for Jamestown.
Woods had nine aces in the match, tying an NAIA record. The Jimmies’ 20 aces as a team also tied an NAIA record. Jamestown hit .545 for the match, the seventh-best mark in NAIA history, with seven players getting two or more kills. Zack Meyer (SR/Wheaton, Ill.) had five kills, followed by Woods and Samuel Jackman (JR/St. Jean Baptiste, Manitoba) with four.
Cox passed out 20 assists and Chris Ross (SO/Aurora, Ore.) four, as UJ had 25 assists on its 26 kills. Meyer and Woods had four digs while Cox and Austin Jacob (SO/Houston, Texas) recorded two block assists each.
Jamestown hosts Kansas Wesleyan University Saturday at 12 p.m.
