FARGO, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Jamestown Blue Jays, coming off of their first West Region Championship in 27 years were looking to keep their winning ways going as they opened up their state championship bid taking on the West Fargo Sheyenne Mustangs.
The Blue Jays season really turned around back in December after a home loss to the same Mustangs 8-1 in Jamestown. After that game the Blue Jays rattled off 17 of 18 wins.
First period, the Mustangs came out playing their game. They were strong on the forecheck and were winning puck battles. The hard work paid off for the Mustangs as Chase Hapka would get the games first goal. Later on in the period the Mustangs would get their first power play of the game. Zachary Moser, the defenseman for West Fargo Sheyenne would carry the puck down the right side and make a centering pass to Jayden Rogen who one-timed the shot into the net for the pp goal and give the mustangs the 2-0 lead.
Second period Saw the Mustangs extend their lead to 3-0. Zachary Moser once again creating the play as he carried the puck into the offensive zone, went around the net and up to the top of the circle where he snapped a pass to a waiting Carson Teckenberg who would tap in the goal. Midway through the period, Brode Hillstrom would make an outstanding save on a breakaway to keep the game within reach.
Third period saw the Mustangs continue to play the game their way. However, Hunter Nelson would pick up his 23rd goal of the season after a faceoff win, Nelson went to the front of the net and the shot from Tyson Jorissen would deflect off of his fellow Blue Jay and go into the net to make it a 3-1 Mustang lead. Nelson would strike again less than two minutes later as this time it was Nolan Nenow setting up the play sending a pass in front for Brooks Roaldson who had his shot saved and the rebound kicked over to an open Nelson who deposited his second goal of the game to bring the score to 3-2 WFS. The Blue Jays would do everything possible to tie up the game but it was too little too late, as the Mustangs escape with the 3-2 win.
Next up the Blue Jays will play Friday morning at 11am at Farmers Union Insurance Center in Fargo. You can hear the game on 103.1 Th Raven, NewsDakota.com, or The Raven app.
