VCSU’s teams will likely be competing to finish in the Top 4 during the team points competition at the meet. Individually, Valley City State enters the meet with several contenders for individual conference championships or All-Conference honors. Taylor Sargent has already picked up an All-Conference finish as she took second in the women’s pentathlon which was contested earlier this season. Sargent scored 2,708 points in the competition.
The other Viking contenders are headlined by senior Zachary Co, who is favored to win the men’s shot put, and Brooke Malsom who has the top women’s long jump mark in the conference this season. Co has already punched his ticket to compete at nationals in both the shot put and the weight throw. He currently ranks second in the NSAA in weight throw.
Hannah Gordon is ranked third in both the shot put and weight throw, while Jasmine Barnes (5000 meters) and Taylor Sargent (60 hurdles) are also ranked third entering the conference meet. Malsom currently ranks fourth in both the 60 and 200 meter races.
In the men’s sprints, JT Reed ranks second in the 60 meter dash while Clay Kummer is fifth in the 60 meter hurdles.
Teams competing at the meet include Valley City State, Dakota State, Dickinson State, Viterbo University, Bellevue University, Waldorf University and Iowa Wesleyan, which was added as an affiliate member in track and field this season.
Sunday’s conference championship is the final indoor meet for the majority of the team. Currently, Zachary Co is the only Viking who has qualified to compete at the NAIA National Meet, March 3-5 in Brookings. Co will represent VCSU in both the shot put and the weight throw.
