Fargo, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)—The Carrington Cardinals wrestling team scored 96 team points after the opening day of the 2022 N.D. class B state tournament at the Fargo Dome. The Cards had 8 wrestlers qualified in the tournament with 4 making the championship round on Friday night. Junior Trace Hoggarth (#1 seed at 113) (42-8) defeated Brady Peterson (sophomore) (29-10), from Central Cass 11-5 in his semifinal win. Hoggarth picked up a pair of wins earlier in the day both by pin over Holter Bridwell of Linton-HMB and Kyler Schalesky of Hettinger-Scranton-Bison. Hoggarth with face Jace Anderson (senior) (44-5) from Killdeer in the championship match. Matthew Duchscherer (#2 seed at 126)(senior) (36-12), defeated Carson Hildre (freshman) (30-15) of Velva by fall at 4:41 of the third period to reach the finals. Duchscherer defeated Daxtyn Eslinger of Napoleon-GS by fall at :57 and Lane Cooper of Bishop Ryan 10-3 earlier in the day. Duchscherer will face Cole Gerhardt (junior from New Salem-Almont (47-4).  Brecken Lura (#1 seed at 138) (senior 50-9) defeated Cade Warbis (senior 38-13) (Hettinger-Scranton-Bison) by major decision 10-1 to advance to the title match. Lura defeated Brayden Haack of Beulah-Hazen by fall at 4:56 and Blaine Wald of Oakes by fall at :41 in the first 2 rounds. Lura also tied the all time wins record in Carrington High school history with 236 career wins tying Walker Carr (2016 graduate). Lura could break the record with a championship win on  Friday night when he will face Mike Nelson (sophomore 39-4) from Lisbon. Michael Clifton (#1 seed at 182)(senior 52-3) defeated Isaac Herbel (junior 38-8) of Northern Lights by fall at 4:37 of the third period to advance to the 2022 state finals. Clifton is making his third straight finals appearance, losing his sophomore year and winning the 182# title last year. Clifton also broke the single season class B pin record recording wins by pin in all 3 matches pushing his pin total to 45 on the season. The previous record of 42 pins in a season was held by Tyler Hoggarth, older brother of Trace Hoggarth. Clifton defeated Trey Bohmbach of Stanley by pin at 6:00 and Josh Meehl of Oakes by fall at 1:11. Clifton will face Silas Renke (33-9) (senior from Lisbon) in the title match.

The Cardinals had 4 other wrestlers competing in the state tournament that were eliminated on day one. Freshman Callen Garber (195) (25-20) went 0-2, Junior Kael Kovar (152) (junior 42-18) went 1-2, Logan Weninger (160) (sophomore 28-19) went 1-2, and Jonathon Lura (23-26) (senior) 1-2.
