VALLEY CITY, N.D. (VCSUAthletics.com) – The Valley City State track and field teams set three school records and won 17 out of the 25 events Friday during a dual at the University of Jamestown.
The Viking women dominated with 10 victories in 12 events, defeating the Jimmies by a final score of 70-47. VCSU’s men won seven out of the 13 events at the dual, but ultimately lost the points race in close fashion, falling 71-61.
Points were awarded to four places in each event on a 5-3-2-1 basis. Only two athletes from each team could score in an event.
Taylor Sargent (55 hurdles) and Brooke Malsom (55 meters) set new school records for the Viking women, and Clay Kummer beat his own school record in the men’s 55 meter hurdles.
Malsom earned 20 points for the Viking women as she won all four events she competed in. She set a new school record in the 55 meters, clocking a time of 7.44 seconds. That broke the old record of 7.50 seconds set by Kerri TurnBough in 2002. Malsom also won the 200 meters (27.50), triple jump (10.31 meters) and long jump (5.36 meters). She jumped a season-best distance in the long jump, and it was her first time competing in triple jump.
Sargent finished the 55 hurdles in a record time of 8.93 seconds, breaking the old record of 9.00 set by Danielle Olson in 1999. She also won the high jump, matching her career-best mark by clearing 1.50 meters. Sydney Co took second in high jump with a career-best mark of 1.50 meters.
Hannah Gordon set a new personal record in shot put, winning the event with a toss of 12.42 meters. Jasmine Barnes also set a new personal record in the mile run as she won the event in 5:52.48. Misa Miyashiro picked up a victory in the 800 meters, rounding the track in a time of 2:49.90. VCSU’s 4×400 relay ended the meet with a victory as well. Kyley Lauf, Miyashiro, Brook Tibke and Liberty Cleveland combined for a time of 4:50.93.
On the men’s side, JT Reed earned 13 points for the Vikings after winning the 55 meters and the 200 meters. He also competed in long jump for the first time in his career and placed second.
Zachary Co won both the throwing events, picking up victories in the shot put and weight throw. Clay Kummer lowered his own school record in the 55 hurdles as he won the event in a time of 8.37 seconds, shaving .04 seconds off his record from last season.
Noah Rolfe won the men’s mile in 4:50.67 to earn five points for the Vikings. About 15 minutes after the conclusion of that race, Rolfe turned around and ran anchor on VCSU’x 4×400 relay team. The team of Kummer, Luis Garcia, Brady Femling and Rolfe won the event in exciting fashion to close out the meet, clocking a time of 3:42.97. Rolfe came from behind in the final 200 meters to earn the victory for VCSU’s relay team.
