GRAND FORKS, N.D. (VCSUAthletics.com) – JT Reed set a new school record in the 200 meters on Saturday as the Viking track and field teams competed at the large UND Indoor Open.

Reed crossed the line in a time of 22.57 seconds, breaking the old VCSU record held by Brandon Sanders (22.77). Reed’s performance was good for ninth place out of 42 runners at the large meet, which featured athletes from NCAA Division I schools NDSU and UND, along with a few NCAA Division II schools.

Reed also ran a fast 60 meter race, placing fifth in a field of 37 runners with his time of 7.08 seconds.

In the throw events, Viking senior Zachary Co bested a field of 21 throwers to win the men’s shot put with a top mark of 16.03 meters. Co has now won the shot put at the last four meets and currently ranks third in the entire NAIA. On Saturday, he also placed second in the weight throw at 16.15 meters.

Luis Garcia ran a strong 800 meter race at UND, placing third for VCSU with a time of 2:02.82. The Viking freshman was the top NAIA runner in the race, beating nine combined runners from Dickinson State and the University of Jamestown. VCSU’s Jayden Gerringer tied a personal record in the high jump, clearing 1.85 meters to place fourth.

In the men’s 60 meter hurdles, Clay Kummer battled a field of runners entirely from NDSU and UND. He crossed the line in 9.03 seconds to place sixth.

On the women’s side, Taylor Sargent had a busy weekend. The Viking senior competed Friday in the penthathlon, scoring 2,708 points to place 10th. She followed that up with sixth-place finishes on Saturday in the 60 meter hurdles (9.42) and high jump (1.45 meters).

“Overall it was just a strong meet for the team,” said VCSU head coach Laquone Robinson. “We are heading in the right direction for the conference meet. The things we are practicing are starting to show at the meets.”

Up next: Valley City State will compete at the large Bison Open, hosted by North Dakota State University on Feb. 4-5 in Fargo.
