JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – It was the main event of Hockey Day North Dakota 2022. The Beavers from Minot State University traveled to Jamestown to take on the Jimmies back where hockey began, outdoors. This was the 6th instalment of the rivalry between the two teams, the Beavers winning 4 out of the first 5 meetings. The Jimmies broke the tie in the first period, however it was a multi goal second period that gave the Beavers the hard fought road victory 2-1.
In the first period, both teams didn’t let the game time temperature of 3 degrees bother them The Jimmies and Beavers began the night playing physical right away. Jimmies goalie Tyson Brouwer making some huge first period saves as the visitors were trying to flex their muscle against the host team. With just under five minutes remaining in the first period, Sophomore center Morgan Venne scored his 3rd goal of the season as the netminder for Minot State was way out of his crease. Venne’s goal was unassisted.
It was a quick start to the middle frame for the Beavers as just 12 seconds in, Connor Navrot received a pass from Carter Barley and beat the Jimmies goalie to tie the game at 1-1. Both teams would get power play opportunities in the second period and neither team would score on them. Just four and a half minutes after the Beavers tied the game up, they would take the lead. This time Jordan Roberston would rip a nice backhand shot just over the glove of Brouwer to give Minot State the first lead of the game.
Third period, the game got a bit more physical as the two rival teams would exchange big hit after big hit. Both teams also saw their powerplay units come up empty in the third and there was also matching roughing penalties called on one sequence. Jamestown pulled Brouwer with just over a minute left in regulation for the extra attacker trying to tie the game but they could not get the game tying goal. Beaver goalie Jake Anthony stood tall and held his teams lead to victory 2-1.
With the win, the Beavers have now won 5 of 6 against the Jimmies this season, with a rematch looming on Thursday night in Jamestown. Minot State runs their record to 20-2-0, and the Jimmies are now 10-9-6. In the 5 wins for the Beavers over the Jimmies, 4 of those wins have come but just 1 goal.
