OAKES, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Oakes falls at home to Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier by a final score of 60-49.
The Tornadoes got an unexpected nine day break after multiple games were postponed due to weather. Friday’s game was certainly in question with high speed winds blowing snow across the highways and low visibility, but they played on. The Rebels started out hot with some three-pointers from freshman guard Joseph Kramlich. For the rest of the night, Oakes was playing catch-up. In the first half, EKM shot 70.6% from the floor and 62.5% from beyond the arc.
In the second half, junior guard Dylan Carlson caught fire knocking down threes that kept Oakes at a distance. They also got solid, consistent game from their sophomore forward Jacob Nitschke who made excellent post moves and finished around the basket. The Rebels’ offensive fire power was too much for the Tornadoes despite having better luck shooting in the fourth quarter.
Nitschke finished with 18 points on 7-10 shooting to lead all scorers. Carlson finished with 12 points going 3-6 from deep. Senior guard Dalton Madcke finished with 11 points and going 6-9 from the free throw line. Sophomore point guard Trey Skoglund led Oakes scorers despite being scoreless in the first three quarters. He finished with 12 points on 5-15 shooting. Junior Andrew Wolff connected on three of his four shot attempts finishing with nine points.
Oakes falls to 2-2 in district play, putting them tied for third with Griggs-Midkota, and 4-6 overall. As for EKM, they win their first district game of the season and immediately catapult to second in the district only behind 3-0 Ellendale. The Tornadoes next game will be on January 29th at Medina/PB at 4:30 p.m.
