HASTINGS, Neb.– The eighth-ranked University of Jamestown women’s wrestling team competed in its first event of the season Sunday, taking home two first-place finishes and seven top-five places at the Hastings Open.
Samantha Weeks (JR/Tacoma, Wash.) (109) and Kelly LaCost (SO/Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) (191) each won their respective weight classes.
Weeks won all three of her matches, including two by tech fall. She also needed just 1:58 to pin Zoey Mzeru of Avila (Kan.).
LaCost, ranked 12th in the NAIA, won two of her three contested matches by tech fall, and in the third, pinned Jazlind Warren of Hastings (Neb.) in 1:13.
Josie Bartishofski (SO/Weston, Wis.), ranked 10th in the NAIA at 123, placed second. Her two wins both came via tech fall.
Also placing second were Haley Ulroan (155) and Sierra Talmadge (SR/Bismarck, N.D.) (170). Ulroan went 2-1 as she pinned her opponent in both of her victories. Talmadge, ranked 7th in the NAIA, came back with four straight wins after losing her opening match. She outscored her opponents 34-2 in three tech fall wins and recorded a pin in her fourth win.
Allie Baudhuin (JR/Coppell, Texas) (130) and Luisita Jara (SO/Menifee, Calif.) (136) both placed fifth. Baudhuin, 7th in the NAIA, went 2-2 on the day while Jara, 9th in the NAIA, went 3-2.
Next up for the Jimmies is the York Open in York, Neb., on Friday.
