OAKES, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Oakes basketball played in a doubleheader against Barnes County North and got a sweep from both games. The first game of the night was a dominant win for the Oakes’ girls by a final score of 74-23. The boys finished the sweep by winning 51-36.
The girls game was dominated by the Tornadoes all game long by their lockdown defense forcing an abundance of turnovers which turned into easy layups. Junior Laikyn Roney scored 18 points in the first quarter with all of her attempts being inside the three-point line. She would continue her dominance in the second quarter getting ten more points and ending up with 28 points. That would be the end of her night as the Tornadoes were up 49-5 at the half.
From there, it was all about gaining confidence and avoiding injury. In the second half, the reserves got their chance to shine and they certainly did. The bench outscored BCN 25-18 to hold off the Bison and improve to 2-0 in district play and 6-3 in the regular season. Aside from the 28 points from Roney, junior Tyler Thompson finished with 11 points and junior Emma Muggli scored ten points.
In the boys game, Barnes County North fought hard to stay with Oakes in the first half and had a lead from time to time, but Oakes strung together a run at the end of the half with some free throws and solid half-court offense.
With a ten-point lead at the half, Oakes put a solid defensive performance together in the second half not giving up any easy baskets. The Tornadoes’ offense was good enough to hold off the Bison in the final 16 minutes.
Leading the way in scoring were a duo of Tornadoes in junior Joey Heim and sophomore Trey Skoglund. Skoglund made most of his money from the free-throw line going 9-11.
Oakes is now 2-1 in District 5 play and 3-4 overall. Coming up next, they will host out-of-state opponent Aberdeen Christian tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
