ORANGE CITY, Iowa (jimmiepride.com)– Northwestern College shot 57 percent in the first half to build an 11-point halftime lead, holding on to defeat the 12th-ranked University of Jamestown men’s basketball team 74-61 Friday night.
Jamestown had its six-game winning streak snapped and is now 15-3 overall and 5-3 in the GPAC. Northwestern improves to 13-5 and 5-3 in the conference.
The Red Raiders raced out to a 10-0 lead and led 18-3 just under four and a half minutes into the game. Jamestown trimmed the lead to eight with a 9-2 run and then got within four after Mason Walters (JR/Jamestown, ND) made a three-pointer at the 8:04 mark.
Four would be as close as the Jimmies would get in the half, as Noah Slagter knocked down three three-pointers and Alex Van Kalsbeek came through with a three-point play as part of a 12-2 to push the lead back to 14.
Van Kalsbeek knocked down a jumper to give Northwestern an 18-point lead, and UJ got no closer than 11 after a Cole Woodford (SO/Redwood Falls, MN) three-pointer made it 61-50 with 9:31 to play.
Woodford’s three was just one of two made by the Jimmies in the second half. Jamestown shot 2-for-12 beyond the arc and only 10-of-33 overall in the final 20 minutes.
Walters led Jamestown with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Woodford was also in double figures with 10.
Van Kalsbeek finished with 23 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists for the Red Raiders.
UJ returns to action Saturday afternoon at Dordt (Iowa) University.
