JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Jamestown City Council met in special session Wednesday afternoon to discuss the opioid settlement agreement that was tabled at their last committee meeting.
On December 16th, the Finance & Legal Committee were given an update on the memorandum of understanding for the agreement. The update followed a settlement reached with a nationwide agreement with Johnson & Johnson. Assistant City Attorney Abigail Giroux explained the total settlement nationwide is approximately $3 billion.
The deadline to submit the documentation is January 2nd, 2022.
It was learned during the special session that the memorandum of understanding was dropped and it was simply voting to approve or not approve joining in the settlement. Mayor Dwaine Heinrich stated the council needed to decide if they wish to join the settlement or not.
Heinrich added it was more of a “housekeeping” measure at this time.
The council unanimously approved to have Mayor Heinrich sign to join the settlement. Councilmember Dave Schloegel was not present.
