JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – It was matinee hockey on Saturday as the Blue Jays hosted the Grand Forks Knight Riders at John L. Wilson Arena in Jamestown. A game that saw back and forth action, a couple of power play goals, and a goal in the final minute of the game to give the Blue Jays the 3-2 win.
In the first period, both teams were trying to establish their games as they continued to send the puck up and down the ice. At 8:21 of the first period a bit of bad ice helped out Grand Forks as a puck was sent around behind the net, and as Blue Jay goalie Olivia Sorlie moved to her right, the puck hit a patch of bad ice and ricocheted back to the left side where Taylor Kilgore was standing, and the freshman for the Knight Riders tapped the puck into the open net to give GF the 1-0 lead.
In the second period, Jamestown would tie the game up. just 1:30 into the middle frame, and on the powerplay, Alexis Kirkeby took the puck up the ice and split two Grand Forks defenseman and then made a nifty move on the goalie and slid home the puck to tie the game at 1-1. The lead wouldn’t last long, because with 5:35 left in the 2nd, Annika Presteng would put on her own highlight goal as she came down on the right side and lifted a beautiful backhand goal top shelf to give the Knight Riders the lead right back 2-1.
Third period started off with 4 on 4 hockey and then the Blue Jays would get back to back powerplay opportunities. After not scoring on the first powerplay, they would connect on the second. Freshman forward Ellie Krueger took the puck off the half wall on the left side cutting towards the net and lifting a backhander just by the glove of the goalie and off the post and in to tie the game up at 2-2. The game would go back and forth and seemed to be heading for extra time. However, with less than a minute left in the game the puck was tied up on the half way in the grand Forks end when Alexis Kirkeby went over to dig the puck free, sending a pass to the far side to wide open defenseman Peyton Walker. Who then did a shot pass from the right side having it direct off of the blade of the stick of Kirkeby and through the 5-hole of Kaylee Baker and into the net with 39.9 seconds left in regulation. Blue Jays would close out the remaining seconds and come away with the win 3-2.
With the win, Jamestown improves to 3-3 on the season and will be in action again on Tuesday when they travel to take on Devils Lake.
