Phyllis Komrosky Matthews, 91, Valley City, ND, passed December 14th, 2021 at SMP Health St. Raphael in Valley City.

Born to Ed and Amelia Komrosky in Columbia, South Dakota on February 21, 1930, she was raised on her great-great grandfathers original homestead south of Sanborn, ND. She attended a single room schoolhouse a quarter mile from her home and was always excited to go with her parents once a week into Valley City for necessities.

Always a hard worker, she and her lifelong friend, Donna Lovell Walters, had jobs in cookie factories, local cafes, and the North Dakota State Hospital. They even took the train, at the age of 16, to St. Paul, MN, where they cooked and waitressed. After that, they hitchhiked to and from Portland, OR for the fun of it.

In 1949, while working at the Mac’s Café in Jamestown, ND, she kept getting a dime tip from a guy named Steve. This is also where her best friend Donna met Jim Walters. The four of them took off to South Dakota and had a double ceremony wedding….and our family was created.

Jamestown was our family’s home from 1949 until 1973. Although she only had an eight grade education, she went on to be the head cook at the Jamestown College and in 1976, create Roby’s Family Restaurant. Her little hamburger stand was the family’s pride and joy for almost 40 years as it changed hands from theirs to our little sister Jan’s.

Phyllis is survived by sons, Bob, Gary, Dave, and Tim; daughter, Jan; 20 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren; her brothers, Jim and Dave.

She is preceeded in death by her husband, Steve; her parents; brothers, Wayne, Darrell, Eugene; and sister, Halcie; twin infant brothers; an infant son, Paul; and stepson, Lester.

Visitation will be at the Lerud Mathias Funeral Home, Valley City, on Sunday, December 19 from 5 PM to 7 PM. The funeral service will be Monday, December 20, 2021 at 10 AM in the Lerud Mathias Funeral Home Chapel.
