WIMBLEDON, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Bridges Arts Council and the Wimbledon Community Museum are proud to partner in bringing Peggy Lee back to downtown Valley City through a mural located on the Northwest Corner of the historical Rudolf Hotel building in Valley City located at 151 Central Avenue South.
Myron Sommerfeld, a North Dakota native, long-time Valley City resident, and an avid Peggy Lee enthusiast dreamed up the idea for placing a large mural at this site. His efforts have largely pushed this idea into a reality. The Wimbledon Community Museum has long embraced Peggy Lee’s ties to their community where she resided in the 1930’s, graduating from Wimbledon High School in 1937.
One of Peggy Lee’s beginning venues was the Rudolf Hotel where she sang live on KOVC radio in 1936. Her seven decade included nominations for 13 Grammy awards. Her 1969 hit, “Is That All There Is?” won her the Grammy for Best Contemporary Vocal Performance. In 1995, she was given the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Her accolades were numerous, but her legacy ties her back to both Valley City and Wimbledon as well as the State of North Dakota.
The Midland Continental Depot & Peggy Lee Museum located at 401 Railway St., Wimbledon, N.D. heard about the project and made a $500 donation to the mural in Valley City. The Bridges Arts Council would like to extend a special thanks to them for their generous donation to our project!
