VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Viper Squirts go 2-1 in Weekend Action
The Valley City Vipers squirt team took to the ice for three home games last weekend.
The Vipers opened the weekend with a 9-3 victory over Fargo Freeze B1 Gray Saturday afternoon. The line of Brody Kalbrener, Gray Kasowski and Kayson Ziemba accounted for eight of the nine goals with defenseman, Riley Roelfsema, tallying the other. Roelfsema started the scoring three minutes into the game with an unassisted goal and three minutes later Ziemba put VC up 2-0 (assist Kasowski). The Freeze would get on the board with two minutes left in the first period but Kasowski would answer with an unassisted goal a minute later to give VC a 3-1 lead after the first period. Kalbrener (unassisted) gave VC a short lived 4-1 lead as Fargo would score a minute later to bring it to 4-2. VC would rattle off the next four goals; Kasowski (assist Roelfsema), Ziemba unassisted, Kasowski unassisted and Ziemba (assist Kasowski) for an 8-2 lead with 6 minutes left in the game. Fargo would add one late that was answered by Kalbrener (unassisted) to end it 9-3. Goaltender Tyler Olson faced 27 shots, turning away 24. Kasowski finished with three goals and two assists, Ziemba added three goals, Kalbrener scored twice and Roelfsema had a goal and an assist.
The Vipers would have a quick turnaround as they faced Mandan Saturday evening and battled to a 4-3 victory. Mandan would take an early 1-0 lead, but Kalbrener would even things up with 29 seconds left in the first period (assist Kasowski and Roelfsema). The only scoring in the second period came from the Vipers as Kasowski (unassisted) and Kalbrener (assist Kasowski and Ziemba) gave VC a 3-1 lead going into the third. Mandan would tie it at 3, but a minute later, with seven minutes left in the game, Kalbrener would score the game winner and complete his hat trick (assist Kasowski and Gavin Wiebe). Olson faced 42 shots and recorded 39 saves. Kalbrener finished with three goals, Kasowski added a goal and three assists and Ziemba, Roelfsema and Wiebe were each credited with an assist.
Devils Lake Flames A came to town Sunday afternoon and Kasowski kept things rolling as he scored six minutes into the game to put VC up 1-0 (assist Kalbrener and Corbin Peterson). The offense would sputter the rest of the day however and Devils Lake would score the final four goals for the 4-1 victory. Olson was able to keep the Vipers in the game as he turned away 41 of Devils Lake’s 45 shots on goal.
Next weekend will be another three game weekend for the Viper squirts when they’ll travel to Mayville and Fargo (2).
