Lowell D. Peterson, 91, Valley City, ND, passed away December 9, 2021 in Valley City.  He was born December 16, 1929 to Lawrence and Bertina Peterson in Michigan, ND.  He grew up and attended school in the Mapes Elementary School through the fifth grade.  He moved with his parents to Lakota, ND and graduated high school there in 1947.  He was very active in athletics, drama and music.

Lowell moved to Devils Lake, ND after graduation and worked for Standard Oil Construction until he enlisted in the US Air Force in 1951.  He served in the Air Force for 4 years, serving in the Air Defense command at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, AK and at Offutt Air Force Base, Strategic Air Command, at Omaha, NE.  He married his wife, Mary at Norman, OK on May 30, 1951.

He was discharged in December of 1954 and enrolled in the Valley City State College.  He graduated from college in 1958 with a bachelor’s degree in business education.  He attended night school and summer schools at NDSU and received his graduate degree in school administration in 1965.  He taught school and coached the sport program for 9 years at Fingal, ND prior to moving to McVille, ND as Superintendent of the McVille school in 1967.

Lowell served the McVille school as superintendent for 25 years and retired in 1992.  He and Mary moved to Valley City to be near their daughter, Toni and her husband, Monte and their children.

He enjoyed his family, music, and golf.  He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, the VFW, AM Vets, and the Elks.  He was also a 32 Degree Mason and active in the Shriners.

Lowell is survived by his children, Toni (Monte) Anderson and Todd (Kathy) Peterson; grandchildren, Elise (Marcos) Bonilla, Shana (Zach) McGough, Cally (Mike) Carlson, and Levi (Katie) Anderson; great grandchildren, Mareli and Mateo Bonilla, Emmette McGough, and Cole and Connor Anderson; and little girls arriving this spring.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brothers, Roy, Orville, Maynard (Pat), Roland, Wally, and Lyle; and sisters, Madelyn “Sissy” Kleven and Irene Yoney.

The funeral service for Lowell D. Peterson, will be held on Tuesday, December 14, 2021 at 2:00 PM, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Valley City.  Visitation will be Monday, at the Lerud Mathias Funeral Home from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM with a prayer service beginning at 7:00.  Lowell will be laid to rest in the Lakota (ND) Cemetery in the spring.  The funeral service will be live streamed then archived along with his obituary at www.lerudschuldt.com
