JAMESTOWN, ND. (NewsDakota.com) – Eight teams competed on Thursday afternoon and evening at the Jamestown Civic Center to open up the 2021 Stutsman County Girls Basketball Tournament.

The number one seeded Thunder of MPB from District 6 had to come from behind in the first game of the day to avoid the upset. The Thunder were down by as many as seven points in the first half and also trailed 17-13 at the break, but a big third quarter turned things around as they outscored the Cardinals 15-6 and took a 28-23 lead at the end of the third quarter and never looked back. For the 2-0 Thunder, Senior Ryleigh Martin had a great game dropping in 17 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and added five steals, Junior Lilly Bohl added six points and pulled down 12 boards. The 0-3 Ellendale Cardinals were paced by Sophomore Kali Norton with 10 points and four steals.

The EKM Rebels jumped out early and never trailed as they cruise to victory and improve to 2-0 on the early season. The Rebels shot 48% from the field and made two 3-pointers, both by Junior Kiara Jangula early in the first quarter. The Rebels had two players in double figures, Sophomore Mataeya Mathern had 22 points and Jangula ended with 16. Junior Emily Jochim had 12 to lead the Mustangs, they drop to 2-2 overall.
CARRINGTON 69, WARWICK 8
The Cardinals led from start to finish in this one, dominating Warwick in all phases of the game. Carrington was led by Madison Johnson and Haley Wolsky who each had 11 points. The Cardinals shot 48% from the field and 43% from three point range in the victory. Jada Clark and Bethany Brown each had three points for Warwick.
NAPOLEON-GACKLE-STREETER 55, GRIGGS-MIDKOTA 45
A back-and-forth start to the game had these two sides even at 17 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, Teagan Erbele helped take control for the Imperials, finishing with a game-high 21 points and 9 rebounds. Sophie Ketterling also reached double figures for the Imperials, scoring 11. Napoleon/GS went 23-46 from the field and 6-10 from deep. For the Titans, they were led by Emma Kollman who had 14, and Josie Johnson finished with 10 points. Griggs-Midkota turned the ball over 30 times in the loss.
Friday’s games begin at 3 pm and will feature Ellendale against South Border. At 4:30, Warwick will take on Griggs-Midkota in the other consolation bracket game. In semifinal number one at 6, Medina-Pingree-Buchanan faces EKM, and at 7:30 Carrington will take on Napoleon-Gackle-Streeter. All games can be heard on Thunder 98.3.
