JAMESTOWN, ND. (NewsDakota.com) – A first year varsity hockey program came into Wilson Arena Tuesday night to battle the Blue Jays in Jamestown’s season opener, conference opener, and home opener and Bismarck Legacy gave the Jays all they could handle.
Jamestown rallied for three third period goals and battled back to beat the Sabers 5-3.
Junior Nolan Nenow had a phenomenal Sophomore season and he picked up where he left off as Nenow found the back of the net twice including a goal on his first shot of the season just 27 seconds into the game to put the Jays up early 1-0.
After Legacy answered with a pair of goals to take the lead, Nenow struck again late in period one on the power play to tie the game at two.
The Sabers got the only goal in period two and carried a 3-2 lead over into period three.
Junior Max Mehus tied the game on a rebound goal about five minutes into the final period and Junior Jarrett Zalumskis got the game-winner from the high slot with a power play goal with only 1:39 remaining in the game. Nenow got the assist.
Junior Ashton Stockert sealed the deal with an empty net goal with 42 seconds to go.
Senior Hunter Nelson chipped in with two assists.
Senior Goalie Brode Hillstrom came up with 23 saves. “It’s a good win,” said head coach Matt Stockert, “We found a way to win”.
Legacy slips to 0-3 on the season, 0-1 in West Region play.
Jamestown hits the road this weekend for a pair of West Region games. The Jays are at Bottineau/Rugby Friday night and at Hazen/Beulah Saturday night.
