OAKES, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – After a solid 15-6 2020-21 season, Oakes was looking to get off to good start despite losing their all-time leading scorer Sadie Hansen and they were able to do just that. The Tornadoes were able to score baskets in bunches off of sloppy play from the South Border Mustangs by a final score of 95-38.
Oakes struggled a bit early with some turnovers of their own, but were able to get into a groove as the game progressed. Laikyn Roney had a solid start to her junior campaign with 26 points after being named to the All-District team a season ago. She was consistent all night long scoring eight points in each of the first three quarters. Senior Abby Cox made some three-pointers and fast break layups which led her to a 24 point performance. Center Emma Muggli showcased her length snagging rebounds and scoring down low racking up 13 points. Her younger sister Ann Muggli and Tyler Thompson both score eight points as well.
It was an all-around solid effort leading the Tornadoes to a 1-0 start. They used their speed to force tons of turnovers which led to easy scores out of their full-court press which they ran all game. Oakes will need games like that if consistently this season in order to make a run at the district title.
