JAMESTOWN, ND. (NewsDakota.com) – Valley City State gave Jamestown everything they could handle on Saturday afternoon before the Jimmies pulled away in the second half, defeating the Vikings 66-59 at Newman Arena.
Valley City State controlled much of the first half, taking a one-point advantage into the break. Eddie Oyet led the Vikings in the first half, picking up eight points and three steals. Mason Walters was held to just six first half points and as a team, Jamestown didn’t reach the free-throw line during the first 20 minutes.
In the second half, Walters took over for the Jimmies, ending with a game-high 21 points and 13 rebounds. Will Cordes was the only other Jimmie to reach double figures, finishing with 13 points on 3-of-5 shooting from downtown. For Valley City State, Connor Entzi was the leading scorer, ending the game with 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting.
As a team, Jamestown shot 45% from the field and 32% from long range. The Jimmies were able to get to the free-throw line twenty times in the second half, converting on 12 attempts. VCSU went 8-13 at the line and shot 40% for the game. The Vikings loss snapped a four-game winning streak, and the victory for Jamestown helps the Jimmies improve to 9-1 on the year.
Valley City State (7-4) will return to action Monday night on the road at Minot State with a 7:30 pm tipoff. UJ will have the next six days off before returning to GPAC play on Friday night against Doane.
