VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Valley City State women’s basketball team had a tough time both scoring and defending the Bemidji State Beavers resulting in a 76-49 loss.
Sophomore Hailey Roberts got off to a strong start scoring seven points in the first half, but had troubles defending Rachael Heittola and Claire Wolhowe who combined for 19 points including Wolhowe knocking down three threes and missing none of her attempts. The second quarter is where the game started to get out of hand as the Beavers outscored the Vikings 30-15.
From there, it was all about taking care of business by holding on to the lead for BSU. They certainly did that by playing unselfish basketball and spreading out the floor. No Beaver scored double digits in the second half, but they didn’t need it as they were able to keep VCSU to under 50 points with lockdown defense.
Junior Adriana Torres led the way in scoring for the Vikings with 14 points on 6-12 shooting. Roberts cooled off in the second half and finished with 9 points on 3-10 shooting. VCSU shot very poorly from all aspects of the court with a field goal percentage of just 25%, a three-point field goal percentage of 22.7% and only making 33.3% of their 21 free throws.
Bemidji State fifth-year senior Brooklyn Bachmann became the 21st student-athlete in program history to reach the 1,000-career point mark. She scored six points in Tuesday’s game.
The Vikings fall to 2-4 on the regular season. It was an overall forgettable effort and they will look to move on from the loss with the Dakota Clash Classic on the horizon. They face 13th-ranked Dakota State on Friday at 5:30 and finish up the mid-season tournament with Presentation on Saturday at 1:00.
