VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The VCSU men’s basketball team was looking to get back into the win column after losing last week at home to Jamestown. They would win on this night against a shorthanded Yellowstone Christian College team who only had 8 active players. Vikings win this one 111-68.
First half, Yellowstone came to play. They got great shooting from Doug Merida, who would lead his team with 15-points in the first half. Valley City would be lead in the first half by Kevin Schramm who would put together 14-points of his own. The teams both were a bit sloppy to start this one as they both were committing turnovers and not having crisp ball movement. The Vikings would get some key scoring from Duoth Gach as he came off the bench to provide 8 first half points, and VCSU would lead at the half 47-35.
Second half was a new ball game in terms of VCSU. They came up with a much better pace and tempo. The full court press they put on opposing teams was making it’s appearance early in the second half and really causing a hard time for the Yellowstone team. Another big factor in the second half was just the lack of players for the Centurions. As mentioned earlier, Yellowstone only had 8 active players in this game, and unfortunately for them it was starting to take its toll on their team. Credit must be given however to Doug Merida (26-points) and Devin Session (14-points) as both those players came to play and refused to back down all night. For the Vikings, they simply could not miss in the second half. Getting 3’s from Eddie Oyet (21-points) Jalen Addison (12-points) and key buckets from Chris Thompson (16-points) on their way to 64-points in the second half alone. Vikings go on to win 111-68.
With the win, VCSU now improves to 4-3 on the season. Next up they will play Friday and Saturday in the Waldorf Classic. Friday night’s game is at 6pm, and Saturday’s game is at 1pm, and both can be heard on KOVC.
