Carrington, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)—-The Oakes Tornadoes advanced to the Region 3 volleyball championship match defeating Carrington 3-2 (23-25, 25-18, 16-26, 25-23, 15-12) and will face defending region and state champion Linton-Hazelton-Moffit-Braddock (LHMB). The Lions defeated Strasburg-Zeeland (SZ) 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-19).

Strasburg-Zeeland jumped out to an early lead (9-4) in the opening set but couldn’t hang on as the Lions came back late to pick up a 25-17 first set win and rolled to there 34th win of the season. A balanced offensive attack was paced by junior middle blocker Shaylee Bosch with a match high 10 kills. Senior outside hitters Jaycee Richter and Teegan Scherr added 8 kills each & Scherr added a match high 5 aces. Richter also added 3 aces and 33 digs. Junior setter Gracie Shumacher had a match high 31 assists. Senior libero Callie Hase recorded a match high 45 digs.
The Clippers were paced by senior middle blocker Shelby Vander Vorst with 9 kills and junior outside hitter Lilly Haak added 5 kills and 24 digs. The Clippers dropped to 25-6-2 overall and will play Carrington at 5:30 on Thursday for the third place match. LHMB improved to 34-2 overall and will be back to defend there region 3 title at approximately 7:00 P.M. Thursday night.
Oakes 3 Carrington 2
For the second time this season the Tornadoes defeated Carrington in 5 sets on their home floor. Oakes defeated Carrington 0n October 12th after trailing 2-0. The Cardinals defeated the Tornadoes 3-1 in the District 5 semifinals in the other matchup between 2 of the top teams in the region. The Tornadoes were paced by District 5 senior athlete of the year Abigail Cox with a match high 27 kills and added 2 aces and 10 assists. Junior outside hitter Laikyn Roney added 12 kills and a pair of stuff blocks. Oakes connected on 103 of 104 serves. Junior libero Brynn Dethlefsen had a match high 3 aces and 63 digs. Bethan Harris had a team high 23 assists.
Carrington was led by junior outside hitter Haley Wolsky with 26 kills and added 4 stuff blocks. Senior middle blocker Sydnie Grager added 20 kills and a match high 5 stuff blocks. Freshman Isabel Wendel added 6 kills for the Cards. Senior setter Emma Rindy recorded 42 assists and junior libero Mya Schroeder had a team high 60 digs. Carrington dropped to 21-9-3 overall and Oakes improved to 15-7-3.
Champion night coverage will start at 5:05 P.M. on Thursday night from Carrington High School on Thunder Country 98.3 FM, AM 1220 KDDR (THE TORNADO), and www.newsdakota.com. First serve scheduled for 5:30 with the third place match between Carrington and Strasburg-Zeeland and the championship to follow 25 minutes later between Linton-HMB and Oakes.
