MAYVILLE, N.D.– For the second time in as many meetings this season, it came down to the end for the University of Jamestown women’s basketball team against Mayville State University Saturday night.

The Comets avenged a two-point loss at Jamestown two weeks ago by defeating the Jimmies 66-63 in a non-conference game. It was the first loss of the season for Jamestown, now 3-1, while Mayville State improved to 3-1.

UJ raced out to an 11-2 lead helped out by a pair of three-pointers by Macy Savela (JR/Mountain Iron, MN) and another by Kia Tower (JR/Bigfork, MN). MSU cut into the Jimmie lead by finishing the quarter on a 12-5 run to trail by just a pair going into the second quarter.

Jamestown’s shooting from inside the arc cooled off in the second as they made just five of 13 shots while the Comets countered with five of seven shooting on two-point attempts. UJ’s last lead of the half was 18-16 at the 7:57 mark and the home team started finding their rhythm. Mayville built a seven-point lead with just under two and a half minutes before halftime, but the Jimmies closed the gap to two at the break.

Despite 23 percent shooting in the third, Jamestown was able to build a 40-36 lead with 3:15 left in the quarter. However, Mayville State went on a 10-2 run to build up a four-point lead of their own.

The Comets gradually began to pull away in the fourth, and went ahead 57-50. Tower scored five straight to get UJ within a bucket, but the home team didn’t allow the Jimmies to retake the lead.

Hannah DeMars (JR/Grand Rapids, MN) had 20 points and seven rebounds for Jamestown. Audrey Rodakowski (SO/Dickinson, ND) added 10 while Tower and Savela each had nine. Official stats were unavailable at the time of posting.

Jamestown is back in action next Saturday at College of Saint Mary (Neb.) for a 2 p.m. start.
