MITCHELL, SD. (NewsDakota.com) – The University of Jamestown football suffered its seventh consecutive loss on Saturday afternoon as the Jimmies fell 31-25 to Dakota Wesleyan.
Neither side put up points in the first quarter, but the Tigers were able to strike for 17 second-quarter points to go into the break in front 17-0. The Jimmies were held to just 13 yards rushing in the first half and Cade Torgerson went 13-22 for 118 yards and an interception.
Dakota Wesleyan would reach the endzone first in the second half, scoring with 3:32 to play in the third quarter on a Jamin Arend 12 yard run. Jamestown trailed 24-0 heading into the fourth quarter before Torgerson hit Steve Justice from 33 yards out to get the Jimmies on the scoreboard. It was the second consecutive week Justice hauled in a receiving touchdown.
Later in the fourth, the Jimmies capitalized on penalties by Dakota Wesleyan as Torgerson brought Jamestown back within 11 when he connected with Ryan Collins from six yards out. On the next offensive possession, the Jimmies fumbled and Dakota Wesleyan scored on the ensuing play to go in front 31-13. Jamestown would find paydirt once again with under two minutes to go when Torgerson hit Javon Bowie-Monteiro to bring it to 31-19.
On the kickoff, Jamestown was able to recover the onside kick to give the Jimmies another opportunity on offense. Just 26 seconds later, Torgerson hit Nick Davis for an 18-yard touchdown reception to bring Jamestown within six points. Dakota Wesleyan recovered the second onside kick by the Jimmies, but the Tigers gave the ball back to Jamestown with 23 seconds to play.
The Jimmies reached midfield with five seconds to go and on the final play of the game, Torgerson’s passed was knocked away as the Tigers held on to beat UJ. Jamestown scored all 25 of its points in the fourth quarter.
Torgerson finished 40-70 for 366 yards with four touchdown passes and one interception. Micah Madyun was the leading receiver for the Jimmies, recording 11 catches for 99 yards. Justice had five catches, a touchdown, and 73 yards receiving. Marcus Giles also had seven receptions for 53 yards. On the ground, Jamestown was held to just 19 total yards rushing.
Jamestown drops to 2-8 overall on the year and 2-7 in the GPAC with the loss. The Jimmies wrap up its season next Saturday afternoon at home against Dordt. Kickoff is set for 1 pm from Charlotte and Gordon Hansen Stadium.
