LAMOURE, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – With four region tournament spots on the line, the six remaining teams brought their A-game in hopes to keep their season alive.
Match 1: Oakes 3, Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier 1
The number two-seeded Oakes Tornadeos defeated the five-seed Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier in four sets by a score of 25-13, 21-25, 25-21, 25-15. Oakes was dominant in set one with kills from their freshmen Bri Schmitz and Ann Muggli. The second set was not as kind for the Tornadoes as the Rebels were not going to let their season end without a fight. Sophmore Mataeya Mathern and junior Reagan Teske led the charge for EKM in the second set with a late-set surge that lifted them over the two-seeded Tornadoes. The Rebels proved that the first set was just a fluke and came out and battled hard. However, Oakes wouldn’t be denied like the second set and were able to fend off EKM to go up two sets to one heading into the fourth set. The Rebels put everything they had in the first three sets and didn’t have anything left in the tank as Cox and the Tornadoes pulled away to advance to the Region 3 Tournament. Senior Abby Cox reached her 1000th career kill and assist in the match.
Match 2: Griggs-Midkota 3 Ellendale 1
Griggs-Midkota beat Ellendale in four sets by a score of 16-25, 25-10, 25-21, 25-17. Sixth-seeded Ellendale came out swinging against fourth-seeded Griggs-Midkota and won the first set thanks to timely kills from juniors Christena Walker and Shelby Miller. However, Griggs-Midkota responded with a nearly flawless second set and showed why they are the better seed dominating with attacks from senior Jenna Larson and junior Asia Becherl. Both teams came to play in the third set in a back-and-forth tightly contested set. Larson took over for Griggs-Midkota and the Titans were able to pull away. It was clean-up work for the four-seed and were able to take care of business to advance to the Region 3 Tournament.
Match 3: LaMoure/Litchville/Marion 2 Carrington 3
First-seeded LaMoure/Litchville/Marion got off to a red-hot set in the first set with sophomore Heidi Steffes getting some fantastic kills for the Loboes. The Cardinals didn’t go quietly, however, as they made a late surge, but it wasn’t enough. The second and third sets were back-and-forth, but in both sets the X-factor for Carrington were senior Sydnie Grager and junior Allison Jarrett. The Cardinals stepped on the gas pedal for the majority of the fourth set, but LaMoure stayed in it and with a late run, were able to win the fourth set with more excellent plays from Steffes and senior Molly Musland. The dramatics continued into the fifth set with spectacular play from both teams, but the Loboes were unable to make a comeback like they did in the fourth set. Junior Haley Wolsky and Grager were sensational down the stretch for the Cardinals and put them past the Loboes.
Carrington, LaMoure, Oakes and Griggs-Midkota (the top four seeds) will represent District 5 in the Region 3 Tournament starting next Monday from Carrington.
