FOREST CITY, IA (NewsDakota.com) – The VCSU Vikings traveled to Forest City, Iowa to take on the Waldorf Warriors for the second time this season. The Vikings won the first match up back in September in Valley City. This time on the road, the Vikings would defeat Waldorf by a score of 21 to 14 to improve their record to 7-2 on the season heading into their final regular season game next weekend.
In the first quarter, the Vikings received the opening kick off, but had to punt the ball away after a three and out. On the opening drive for the Warriors, they would travel 62-yards in 11 plays to score the first points of the game. It was a heavy dosage of the run game for Waldorf on the drive as Sophomore Quarterback Jordan Cooper had 3 rushing attempts for 16-yards, and Sophomore running back Taye Buchanan rushed the ball 3 times as well for 15-yards. The drive was capped off by a 5-yard touchdown pass from Cooper to Junior wide receiver Zach Morel, and Senior Kicker Slater Gifford added the PAT to give Waldorf the 7-0 lead with 7:57 left in the first quarter.
The Vikings would start off the second quarter with possession. VCSU would drive 86-yards in 13 plays to tie up the game. Sophomore running back Justice Bice would run the ball four times on the drive gaining 15-yards. Bice on his final rush would punch it in from 4-yards out to put the Vikings within one, and then Nico Magana would add the PAT to tie the game at 7-7 with 11:28 left in the first half. On the ensuing kick off, the Warriors would fumble the ball at their own 20-yard line and be recovered by VCSU. The Vikings would not gain any yards on the three plays, and Kicker Nico Magana would have his 37-yard field goal attempt blocked by Logan Knutson of the Warriors. With the ball back to the offense, Waldorf was driving down the field looking to take back the lead. However, Jordan Cooper would throw an interception to Vikings Cornerback Anthony Russell at his own 13-yard line. The VCSU offense just could not get anything going on this offensive drive and would have to punt the ball back to Waldorf. The Warriors offense would have to travel 48-yards to retake the lead, and they would do that in just two plays. On 2nd down and 9, Warriors quarterback Jordan Cooper would run 47-yards for the touchdown and give his Waldorf Warriors the lead once again, this time with the PAT, 14-7. That would be the score going into half-time.
The Warriors would receive the kick off to open up the second half of action, but the Vikings defense would stand tall and force a 3 and out. With the Vikings offense taking the field for the first time in the second half, Pfeifer and company were looking to tie up the game. The offense was faced with a 3rd and 6 situation at their own 44-yard line, and Pfeifer would complete an 18-yard pass to Ben Dumond to keep the drive alive. The two would convert on another 3rd down situation later on in the drive to keep the offense on the fielf for VCSU. The offense would cap off the 14 play, 85-yard drive when Jalen Pfeifer found Michael Cornelious for the 8-yard TD pass, and Nico Magana would add the PAT to tie the game at 14-14 with 4:37 left in the third quarter.
When the final frame began, the Vikings found themselves on offense, looking to take the lead for the first time on the afternoon. Starting off the drive with a short field, at the Waldorf 33-yard line, the Vikings made sure to take full advantage of this opportunity. Pfeifer would find Jacob Gottenborg for the 6-yard passing touchdown, and Nico Magana would tack on the PAT, to give VCSU their first lead of the day 21-14 with 12:09 remaining in regulation. The offense would be back out on the field later on in the quarter trying to close out the game. With just over 2 minutes remaining, running back Justice Bice would fumble the fumble just shy of the goal line and Waldorf would recover with 2:03 remaining in the game. Luckily for Bice and the offense, the Vikings defense made quick work of the Warriors offense, and forced a turnover on downs after 4 quick plays. With that stop, the Vikings did their best to try and bleed out the clock. Nico Magana would trot onto the field looking to extend the lead with a 24-yard field attempt, but for the second time in the game, he would have it blocked and Waldorf would take over with 1:16 left in regulation. With the Warriors offense driving late in this game trying to tie up the score, Jordan Cooper completed a pass to Dom Watt, who was running and fighting for yards, he would fumble the ball and the Vikings would fall on it and recover the ball and close out the game. The VCSU Vikings win this one 21-14.
With the win the Vikings improve to 7-2 on the season. Also with the win, Vikings Head Coach Dennis McCulloch earns his 150th career victory.
