SIOUX CENTER, IA (NewsDakota.com) – The VCSU men’s basketball team falls to 0-2 on the regular season losing to Dordt University by a final score of 104-74.
The Defenders got out to a fast start making most of their money around the hoop to get out to an early lead. However, the Vikings were able to make four out of their first six three-pointers to keep themselves in the game. VCSU struggled defending the paint and sophomore Bryce Coppock took advantage scoring ten points in the first ten minutes of the game. Vikings’ senior Kevin Schramm wouldn’t let this one get out of hand early, however, as he was able to keep VCSU in the game momentarily. Unfortunately, the second ten minutes of the first half were unkind to the Vikings. They were unable to stop Coppock who finished with 24 points in the opening 20 minutes on 9-of-11 shooting. VCSU fell behind 52-34 at the half shooting just 36% from the field.
Dordt didn’t mess around to begin the second half scoring the first 12 points right out of the gate. They would cool off a bit, but it wouldn’t be enough for the Vikings to get back into the game. The Defenders continued to dominate the paint outscoring VCSU 54-22 and outrebounded the Vikings 51-23.
Junior transfer Duoth Gach led the Vikings in scoring with 17 points on 6-17 shooting. He finished with one more point than senior Jalen Addison on 6-14 shooting. Schramm finished with nine points. The Vikings shot just 38.6% from the field.
The Vikings will look forward to their first home game on Wednesday against the University of Minnesota-Morris hoping for their first victory.
