OAKES, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Oakes won their regular season finale against Medina-Pingree-Buchanan in three straight sets by a score of 25-16, 25-22, 25-21.
It was senior night Tuesday evening in Oakes and the Tornadoes were given all they could handle. The Thunder wouldn’t let Oakes get into much of a rhythm. However, Oakes showed their mental toughness and were able to get points in crucial scenarios to avoid having to play in extra sets.
Seniors Sam Hermes and Abby Cox got the game started with a couple of kills for Oakes and set the tone for the first set. After a solid start, the Tornadoes wouldn’t let go of their lead and cruise to an easy first set.
The second set was a set filled with runs by both sides. Both teams in the middle of the set got runs of five points which forced both coaches to call timeouts. After the dust settled, Oakes remained mentally tough down the stretch to pull away in set number two.
Oakes played well in the third set and MPB only briefly held the lead in the early portions of the set. Oakes grew their lead, but the Thunder came back in hopes to force a fourth set. The Tornadoes wouldn’t let that happen and Oakes finished the job to win their final regular season game.
Oakes will wait to find out who their opponent will be for their first round matchup in the District 5 Tournament starting October 28th.
