BISMARCK, N.D. (Prairie Public Radio) – The director of the state Department of Human Services’ Economic Assistance Division says it’s too early to tell if the demand for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program will be stronger this year because of higher natural gas prices.

Michelle Gee says the program began accepting applications October first.

Gee says the state has not yet received its final allocation of LIHEAP dollars from the federal government, but she says she expects it will be about the same as last year, which was $21 million.

Last year, the program served about 12,800 households in North Dakota. Gee says there are income limits.
