JAMESTOWN, ND. (NewsDakota.com) – The Jamestown High School football fell to 5-2 overall on the year Friday night as Mandan came from behind to knock off the Blue Jays with a game-ending field goal to win 17-14.
The Jamestown defense was locked in and dominant for the first three quarters of the game, forcing four turnovers and controlling Mandan’s offense. After Jamestown went ahead 14-0 on a 43-yard touchdown rush from Adam Kallenbach in the fourth, the Braves and Kasyn Jablonski returned the ensuing kickoff 97 yards for the first Mandan touchdown. The Braves got another score on a 68-yard strike to Jablonski to tie it at 14 with just over four minutes to play.
Jamestown had good field position after the defense got a stop to set up a potential game-winning drive. The Blue Jays attempted a 38-yard field goal with 30 seconds to play but it missed just left and Mandan would capitalize on its final opportunity on offense.
The Braves traveled 59 yards down the field, aided by a pass interference penalty, to set up the game-winner from 36 yards out. Junior Alex Wegner put it through the uprights to give the Braves a 17-14 victory for their third win of the season.
On offense, Jakob Schempp led the Jamestown rushing attack with 15 carries for 67 yards and two catches for 35 yards. Jackson Walters was 4-9 through the air but carried the ball 13 times with 64 yards and a rushing touchdown. Walters also threw three interceptions on the night. Kallenbach’s lone rush of 43 yards resulted in a score, and he had one catch for 13 yards.
Jamestown will return to play next Friday night on the road at Minot with a 7 pm kickoff. The Blue Jays, now 5-2 with a 4-0 WDA mark, only have two regular season games left before the Class A playoffs begin on October 23rd.
