Valley City had to work hard for every single point in their four set win over Fargo North. The Hi-Liners defeated the Spartans 26-24, 23-25, 25-17, 25-23.
In the first set, both teams got some early runs, but a third of the way through the set, they both were trade haymakers. Valley City had a four point lead, leading 24-20, but gave all the points back to tie it 24-24. After a brief timeout, the Hi-Liners were able to win the next two points to win the first set.
That set the tone for the rest of the match as neither Valley City nor Fargo North took any points for granted. The Hi-Liners pulled away from the Spartans in the third set, but it was back and forth for the majority of the set.
In the final set, Valley City had a semi-comfortable 3-5 point lead for the majority of the set, but Fargo North made things interesting. In the end, Valley City remained composed and pulled away to win in four sets.
Great attacks from junior Faith Peterson, senior Peyton Pederson, and junior Samantha Hatcher along with spectacular digs from Abbey Thornton and timely blocks led to the team’s victory. They also had great sets all evening long from senior Dylann Diegel. The Hi-Liners didn’t make many errors down the stretch, unlike the Spartans who had many service errors in critical situations.
The Hi-Liners improve to 4-6 in region play and 5-9 overall. They have a road game at Wahpeton next Tuesday, October 5th.
