Carrington, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)—-Hillsboro-CV (HCV) spoiled the 2021 Carrington homecoming game with a dominate 41-0 win, holding the Cardinals to a season low 54 yards of total offense. The Burros set the tone early forcing the Cardinals to punt on the first possession of the game and the ensuing punt which was under extreme pressure netted just 2 yards. The Burros, starting from the Carrington 25 yard line scored in 3 plays, capped by a 2 yard touchdown run from Jace Leshuk with 8:28 to play in the opening quarter. A 24 yard pass completion from HCV starting quarterback Riley Olsen (junior) to Gannon Limke (6’6 senior) setup the first score.
Olsen would finish the game 5 of 7 overall for 61 yards and one touchdown pass. The touchdown pass was the second score of the game to Peter Dryburgh with 7:57 to go in the first half. Parker Gallagher (senior WR/kicker) added the extra point (4 of 5 on PAT attempts). The Burros would add a pair of scores late in the first half aided by Cardinal turnovers. Olsen would take a 46 yard TD run with 4:34 to go in the half for a 21-0 lead. Jake Swanson (junior) added a 2 yard TD run with 1:40 to go to give the Burros a 28-0 halftime lead.
Olsen had a total of 45 rushing yards on 7 carries overall with the TD run. Leshuk finished the game with 7 carries for 74 yards and 2 scores, the latter, a 54 yard score on the first possession of the third quarter with 9:05 to go in the third quarter, putting the game into a running clock situation. The Burros capped off the scoring with a Derek Brockness (senior) 42 yard TD run with 3:01 to go in the third quarter. Brockness finished the game with 5 carries for 58 yards. Cole Hebl added 24 rushing yards on 4 carries for the Burros.
The Cardinals had just 10 yards of offense at halftime and finished the night with just 54 total yards. The offense had a tough time getting momentum as the HCV defensive front was almost invincible. Backup quarterback Jacob Page completed 4 of 7 passed in the second half for 30 yards, which accounted for more than half of the total offense. Starting quarterback Grady Shipman who was pressured all night completed 2 of 7 passes for a minus 2 yards and 2 interceptions. Shipman hauled in a 17 yard reception from Page in the third quarter, the second longest play from scrimmage in the game. Logan Weninger had a 18 yard run in the second half which was the longest play of the night.
The Burros improved to 5-1 overall (4-0 in the NE 11B region), while the Cardinals dropped to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the region. The Cards will travel to Northern Cass next Friday night. The game will be aired on AM 1600 KDAK (THE CARDINAL), FM 100.1, and www.newsdakota.com
