VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The ON THE MOVE Partnership would like to invite everyone to come out and taste FREE samples of Tomato and Pepper Salad that will be served at the Farmers Market on Thursday, Sept. 16 from 4 pm to 6 pm at the Rosebud Visitor’s Center parking lot.

Shopping at the farmers market supports our local farmers and keeps the money you spend on food closer to home. The vendors offer a variety of delicious produce including tomatoes, zucchini, potatoes, peppers, corn, pumpkins, cucumbers, fresh herbs, celery, onions and more! They also feature delicious canned goods such as pickles and jams and tasty baked products.

The fruits and veggies available at the Farmers Market are picked the same day when they are perfectly ripened. This enhances the taste, texture and aroma of the produce. Because the produce is picked at the peak of its season, there are abundant nutrients available that offer a host of health benefits.

Eating a variety of fruits and veggies may help reduce the risk of many diseases, including heart disease, high blood pressure and some cancers. Fruits and veggies are low in calories, packed with phytonutrients and a great source of fiber which can help us to maintain a healthy weight because it keeps you feeling full longer. We should aim to fill ½ our plates with fruits and vegetables! The more color variety, the better!

When you visit the Farmers Market, look for some of your favorites or try a new fruit or vegetable. Be sure to ask the vendor his/her favorite way to prepare the veggies they have to offer. Not sure how to prepare Yukon Gold Potatoes…just ask!

It’s also a great time to ask how and where the food is produced. And don’t forget to bring your kids to the market to learn about farming and produce. Let them pick out something new to try, kids are more likely to try a new food that belongs to them!

One vendor has made the farmers market a real family business! Kent and Patty Gronlie are grandparents to Abby and Alyssa Wilmes who have “Double A Produce” as a summer project. Abby and Alyssa help plant the garden and pick the veggies at harvest time and Kent and Patty sell the vegetables for their granddaughters at the market.

Mark your calendars for Thursday, Sept. 16 from 4pm- 6 pm at the Rosebud Visitor’s Center parking lot. The Tomato and Pepper Salad will be served by members of the Barnes ON THE MOVE Partnership. Don’t miss it!
