VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Valley City’s Koye Grebel recently competed at the Fargo National Tournament in the Cadet Division (16 and under). The tournament is the largest youth national tournament in the nation, featuring wrestlers from all over the United States and the Dominican Republic. The entire tournament had a record entrant count of 5,900 wrestlers.
Koye stayed with a host family in Bismarck two weeks prior where Team North Dakota held their training camp, practicing three times a day.
Unlike the familiar folk style wrestling which is competed in high school and college, the Fargo tournament featured two separate tournaments with the two Olympic styles (freestyle and Greco Roman) and took over eight days to complete. Koye, this past season’s ND high school Class A 106-pound state champion, participated in both tournaments in the 113 pound division registering records of 3-2 in freestyle and 1-2 in Greco.
