WATFORD CITY, ND. (NewsDakota.com) – A six-run second inning for Post 14 on Thursday afternoon helped Jamestown hold off a Watford City comeback as the Eagles defeated the Walleye 7-6 to begin the West Region Tournament.
Watford City took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the second before the Jamestown offense woke up. Connor Hoyt got the inning started with a single, and then Post 14 scored for the first time on a Ty Monson RBI single into right field. Jamestown would then load the bases and Jackson Walters tied the game up with a free pass before Jacoby Nold drove in the go-ahead run and put the Eagles up 3-2.
After Isaac Mimong brought in the fourth run of the second on a sacrifice fly, Gage Orr delivered two RBIs on a double to left field to plate Walters and Nold. Watford City picked up a run in the top of the fourth, but Jamestown got that run back on a Brooks Roaldson single to lead 7-3. Six different Post 14 batters recorded an RBI on Thursday.
The Walleye tried to mount a comeback in the seventh, scoring three runs in the top of the inning before Walters came in and shut the door to pick up the save for the Eagles.
Starter pitcher Connor Hoyt went six innings, allowing four earned runs while striking out three. Hoyt tossed 101 total pitches and recorded a first pitch strike to 24 of 32 batters faced. Walters struck out two to get the save and move Jamestown into the winner’s bracket.
The Post 14 Eagles will now play tomorrow at 4 pm against the winner of Dickinson vs. Mandan. Jamestown needs to finish the West Region Tournament with a top four seed in order to move on to the Class A State Tournament next week at Jack Brown Stadium.
