JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – What is sleep ergonomics and why does it matter?
According to the CDC, adults need 7 or more hours of sleep per night for the best health and wellbeing. Adults who were short sleepers (less than 7 hours of sleep per 24-hour period) were more likely to report being obese, physically inactive, and current smokers compared to people who got enough sleep.
Getting a good night of rest is always important, but Dr. Nick Schmidt with Sanford Health says sleep ergonomics may be just as important.
Dr. Schmidt says when things such as posture, mattress, pillow and other ergonomics factors aren’t addressed, it adds to poor sleep habits.
He says he usually recommends side or back sleeping when it comes to sleep positions.
Dr. Schmidt added there are other factors that can be thrown in the mix to create a better night’s rest.
Keeping the bedroom quiet, dark, and at a comfortable temperature, avoiding electronics at night, and not eating a large meal right before bedtime can also help.
