MANDAN, ND. (NewsDakota.com) – The Valley City Hi-Liner offense struck for four runs in the first inning and never trailed as they defeated Jamestown 10-3 to open up the Class A State Softball Tournament.

The Hi-Liners scored six of their 10 runs in the first two innings, batting around in the first after drawing three walks and being hit by pitches on two separate occasions. Senior Emma Meilke grabbed two RBIs and scored a run in the first two frames and Lexi Leroux scored twice. Jada Nelson collected an RBI in the first on a slap single into left.

Jamestown was trailing 6-0 entering the top of the fourth when senior Ella Roaldson singled to bring up Jenna Fischer. The bat of Fischer stayed hot as she took the first pitch she saw over the center field fence to put the Jays on the board and bring the score to 6-2. Jamestown would get even closer in the fifth when Addi Douty scored on an RBI double from Roaldson.

Valley City added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth, scoring two in each inning. Nelson got another RBI for the Hi-Liners and Autumn McGough drove in a run in the fifth. Senior Hailey Thoreson drove in both runs in the sixth with a triple, and Valley City shut the door on Jamestown to move on to the state semifinals tomorrow at 4 pm.

Hailey Schaeffer tossed a complete game in the circle for Valley City, going all seven innings while striking out 11 and allowing seven hits. Katie Falk was handed the loss for Jamestown, completing all six innings in the circle and giving up 11 hits and 10 runs, eight of which were earned. The Blue Jays committed three errors defensively.

Valley City (17-8) will play Dickinson at 4 pm tomorrow in the semifinals. Jamestown (20-11) will no longer have a chance at the Class A title but will play at 11 am against WF Sheyenne.
