HUNTER, ND. (NewsDakota.com) – Oakes advances in the loser bracket of the Region 1 Tournament after a 13-8 win over Northern Cass on their home turf.
This game had a little bit of everything: great pitching, great hitting, comebacks, rallies, pickles and steals after walks. The Tornadoes started out with a 7-1 lead after the top of the second but gave it up in the bottom of the fourth trailing 9-8. Senior Garret Meehl came in and dominated on the hill in relief with three-and-two-third scoreless innings with five Ks and just one hit allowed.
Entering the bottom of the seventh, Oakes trailed 9-8, but they were able to get five runs thanks to six hits and some great baserunning including Meehl stealing home after a walk. Meehl came back in the bottom of the seventh and shut down the Jaguars 1-2-3.
The Tornadoes had three batters get three hits (Meehl, Connor Schall, and Howie Neustel) and Steele Hansen had a two-hit day as well.
Oakes is scheduled to play again in the 5:00 p.m. game, but the Oakes-Northern Cass went longer than scheduled, so it will likely be played around 6:30 p.m. Tune to The Tornado 1220 AM/95.9 FM for the second game of the day.
