JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The 1883 Stutsman County Courthouse State Historic Site has a new addition to its landscape.

Brayden Motter, a member of BSA Troop 163, has been working on his Eagle Project which was to install a flagpole at that site. Over the past several months, Brayden has been refining his project plan, coordinating with the staff at the Courthouse and organizing the installation process.

The flagpole installation officially began on May 7th when Otter Tail Power Company donated the resources for digging the hole. After a brief flagpole shipping delay, the concrete was poured this past weekend and the flagpole was installed on May 17th. Troop 163 scouts, their families, youth leaders and Brayden’s mentors were there to support the final installation step which included cleaning the courthouse, lifting the flagpole into the ground, leveling the pole and conducting the first flag raising ceremony.

He is hoping to get volunteers from his troop to complete a weekly flag raising ceremony throughout the summer.

The Eagle Scout rank is a rank that only 8% of BSA scouts achieve. Earning the Eagle Scout rank includes a project that is led by the scout that represents their ability to plan, lead and complete a project.

The average Eagle project is 130 hours of work. Once the project is complete, the scout submits a project workbook and can then apply to for the Eagle Scout rank. The application process includes a Board of Review, which is an interview of the scout by an Eagle Review Board.

With the flagpole now up, Brayden is working on finishing his project paperwork and completing his final merit badge to be able to apply for his Eagle Scout Rank.

His goal is to have all of his documentation completed to submit his Eagle Scout rank application before he leaves for Camp Wilderness in June, where he will spend 8 weeks as camp staff as a merit badge counselor in the fishing area.

Brayden is very appreciative for all the support he received throughout this project.
