JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Jamestown Marksmanship Education Range (JMER) will once again be searching for land needed to build a range in Stutsman County.

Previously, JMER President Keith Domke approached the county with a proposal to lease 27.9 acres of county land on the east side of the reservoir to build a 36,000 square foot facility.

This brought up concerns with residents in the area.

Melissa Schumacher is a resident in the NE part of Jamestown.

Schumacher added they had concerns of safety outside of the range and the noise for residents and the nursing home in the area.

One man with JMER stated that the land search continues to be the biggest obstacle for the non-profit organization, adding that those who had issues would be welcomed to bring their club recommendations on land they could use to build the range.

Commissioner Steve Cichos made the following motion.

Before a vote, Commissioner Joan Morris stated their responsibility was to hear all requests made for developmental property such as the land requested to lease for a gun range.

Morris added that finding a location in a commercial area was worthy of exploring, citing other communities such as Sioux Falls, SD, West Fargo, and Bismarck.

The commission voted to deny the land lease and work with the JMER on a future gun range site on a 3 to 1 vote with Commissioner Ramone Gumke voting in opposition.

Commissioner Dennis Ova was not present.
