FARGO, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Valley City scored two runs with two outs in the top of the seventh inning but it wasn’t enough as the Hi-Liners fell 5-4 to Fargo South in the first game of the EDC doubleheader in Fargo.
Joe Cummings tripled to score Ethan Miller who began the inning with a single. Then one pitch later, Devyn Thornton singled in Cummings to make it a 5-4 game. But Matthew Bryant struck out Adam Bitz to end the the rally and the game.
The Hi-Liners scored first when Ethan Miller scored on a passed ball with two outs in the first. South would come back to tie the game at 1 in the bottom of the first on Braydon Dettling’s rbi single.
Valley City would go back up by one in the second when Kai Kringlie walked with the bases loaded to score Tucker Brown.
South would come back again and tie it at 2 in the bottom of the third when Ben Montplaisir tripled to score Tanner Kirkeby. The Bruins would take the lead for good in the fourth when Anthony Erickson singled to score Kolby Nissen to make it 3-2.
The Bruins would make it 5-2 in the fifth on Dettling’s second rbi single and Abram Anderson’s steal of home as part of a double steal.
For Valley City, Ethan Miller was 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Broden Muske was 2 for 3. Joe Cummings, Devyn Thornton and Adam Bitz all had hits for Valley City.
Alex Thornton went the distance on the hill for the Hi-Liners. He allowed seven hits, five earned runs with a walk and two strikeouts in six innings of work.
In game two, South scored a run in every inning but the fifth in a 10-0 win.
Adam Bitz, Alex Thornton, Braxton Jorissen and Devyn Thornton each had a hit for the Hi-Liners.
Valley City is now 0-9 overall and 0-5 in the Eastern Dakota Conference. The Bruins improve to 4-6 overall and 2-2 in the conference
