SIOUX CITY, IA. (NewsDakota.com) – The Jamestown women’s volleyball team showed once again why they are the #1 team in the country on Wednesday afternoon as the Jimmies defeated Providence (25-22, 25-16, 25-18) in straight sets.
Jamestown and Providence traded points back and forth in the first set until the Jimmies rattled off three consecutive points with the match tied at 20. After the set one victory, Jamestown settled in and dominated the Argos for the rest of the match.
UJ was led by Junior Anna Holen who recorded 11 kills and 13 digs in the win. Kalli Hegerle was the only other Jimmie to finish with double-digit kills, adding 10. Hegerle, who had a career-high 23 kills against Viterbo on Tuesday, hit .500 or above in a match for the second straight day.
Jamestown tallied 19 total blocks as a team, including five from Jayla Ritter and four from Corina Huff. The two middle blockers for Jamestown combined had 10 kills on just 22 total attacks.
Senior Sydney Ellingson led the Jimmies in digs with 20 while also recording a service ace. Hannah Schiele finished the day with three of the six service aces for Jamestown, and four digs. Megan Gaffaney and Jackie Meiklejohn combined for 40 assists in the match.
Jamestown now moves on to the Elite Eight of the national tournament on Thursday at 5 pm. The Jimmies hold a 29-1 overall record, and their opponent for tomorrow’s match is still to be determined.
