The Viking men and women each won six individual events during the four-team meet that featured athletes from VCSU, Dickinson State, University of Jamestown and Dawson Community College.
VCSU’s men totaled 68 points to place second behind Dickinson State. The Viking women tallied 61 points, finishing in third place behind Dickinson and Jamestown. The top five finishers in each event earned team points on a 6-4-3-2-1 scale.
Two weeks after setting a new school record in the 100 meters, VCSU sophomore Brooke Malsom did it again on Thursday. The Viking sprinter broke a 33-year-old school record in the 200 meters, along with lowering her own record in the 100. Malsom finished the 200 meters in 25.34 seconds to place first at the meet. That broke the old school record of 26.19 set by Donita Stenson in 1988. Malsom also lowered her 100-meter record to 12.44 seconds as she placed second. It was all part of a big meet for Malsom, who also set a personal record in the long jump with a mark of 5.51 meters – the second farthest mark in school history.
Malsom was one of five different Viking women who won events on Thursday. Hannah Gordon had a pair of first-place finishes, winning the hammer throw with a career-best mark of 41.06 meters. She also threw 11.42 meters in the shot put for first place. Gordon competed and placed in all four throwing events on Thursday as she scored 18 team points. She added a second-place finish in javelin and a fourth-place finish in discus.
Taylor Sargent hit a new personal-record in the high jump as she cleared 1.53 meters (5′.25″) to take first place. That also ranks her second in the North Star Athletic Association this season. Allyssa Weitkum ran a strong 800 meter race to place first as well, crossing the line in a time of 2:30.44.
VCSU senior Peyton Halverson won the women’s javelin with a mark of 36.06 meters. Between the men and the women, VCSU took first place in six of the eight throwing events.
Zachary Co dominated the men’s throwing events, taking first place in shot put, discus and hammer throw. Co won the shot put with a mark of 15.78 meters. He also threw 42.17 meters in the discus and 48.56 meters in the hammer throw to win first place.
Clay Kummer doubled up with a pair of first-place finishes and two personal records in the men’s hurdles. The Viking freshman won the 110 hurdles in a time of 15.93 and the 400 hurdles with a time of 56.63. In triple jump, Viking freshman Garrett Ward won the event with his career-best mark of 12.96 meters (42’6.25″)
VCSU’s men had four second-place finishes including Cody Fuchs (400 meters), Brady Femling (1500 meters), Jayden Wheeling (3,000 steeplechase) and Kyle Odegard (javelin). The Viking women also had four second-place finishes including Malsom (100 meters, long jump), Tyler Smith (high jump) and Gordon (javelin).
